Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has a population of about 700 students and 40 staff members. The school is located within a low socio-economic area in South San Jose and so funding for our school is limited. Eighty percent of the students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. Many of our students are English Language Learners. The school demographics are 48% Hispanic or Latino; 47% Asian; 1% Filipino; 1% White; 1% African-American; with other ethnicities individually counting for less than 1%.
The materials that we are requesting for our STEAM challenges will help our students build and improve skills such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
My Project
Last year we (a colleague and I) started a STEAM Lab at our school. We were able to get some funds from fundraising events that helped fund the basic materials that we needed. We facilitated monthly STEAM challenges for all of the students at our school. Teachers with their class go to the STEAM lab for an hour every week, and they do a mini-lesson on the STEAM challenge that we provided them. Students then create and build something to solve problems presented on those challenges.
Having a STEAM Lab with all the materials necessary for the teachers to teach a lesson and for the students to learn and create something has been really helpful and we want to continue to provide our school with this experience for the next school year.
And now, we are thinking ahead, and we want to improve whatever it is that we currently have. We are looking at planning and finalizing the STEAM challenges for the next school year. This means that we also need to find resources to get the materials that we are going to need. And this is the reason why I wrote this project. I am hoping that you can help us provide these materials for our students so that they can create meaningful learning through STEAM. Thank you.
