Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of my students came into my class this year believing he was dumb. He thought school wasn't for him. He has begun to change his thinking, but it wasn't until the most recent science project where my students built their own cars that I finally saw him come to life.
I teach fifth grade in a title I school in Tucson, Arizona.
My school is located in a great community. Most of my students have been going to our school since kindergarten. These kids are so bright and wonderful. Unfortunately, the majority of them came in well below grade level in all subjects, but we are working hard to catch them up as fast as possible.
My Project
Over the last few weeks my students have been building cars with a science kit. While building these cars I have seen my students shine. Students who normally don't want to be at school or don't believe school is for them have been begging to stay in from recess to work on their cars. One student went to a thrift store to buy a remote control car just to get parts to bring in for class. This was all without my asking them to do this.
I want the fire that has been ignited in my students to continue. I want them to see that school and science are important in their lives and can be exciting. I believe this robotics kit can help achieve this dream.
Recently I got some of my students on a coding website and there are many who are hooked, both boys and girls.
I want to give them a further opportunity to expand on that enthusiasm by letting them program their own robot.
I want my students, both my boys and my girls, to see themselves as someone who is confident and capable when it comes to science and technology. This kit can help my students on their way to becoming future engineers, computer programmers or anything else my kids dream up.
