Mastering Math With Money

My Students

Do you remember math time in the classroom? What was the math activity that you looked forward to the most? Was it learning to count with money? Help my students discover the fun in learning basic math computation using money!

The students that I teach are already behind their peers in basic knowledge.

The majority of these students come from very low income families and in some cases even homeless families. My students come from families that, a lot of the time, can't help them with their basic math skills. Our school has a 92% poverty level. Of all of our students 52% of them do not speak English as their first language. Despite their hardships these students come to school every day willing and wanting to learn.

My Project

The one thing that is often on a persons mind when they live in poverty is money. What better way to teach students than with something they already have on their mind and something that they find truly valuable to their daily lives. I am requesting fake money in the form of coins and bills. I am also requesting age level appropriate games and activities that integrate all the basic skills (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication and fraction) using money.

These students are coming to me with very little basic knowledge in math.

As a Title I teacher I see students who struggle and are 1 or more grade levels behind their peers. For these students especially, they need math manipulatives that keep their attention and really increase their basic knowledge.
