My Project

I was at the library watching a five and six year old play with puppets. It was joyful to watch them engage with one another creatively. I was impressed with how quickly each child created a character, dialogue, and plot. Many essential language skills were being practiced in a natural and fun way. As an educator, I think about key skills my students need to be successful readers and writers, and what are the most engaging ways to master them. First grade language arts standards require students to: retell stories including key details, understand the central message or lesson, describe characters, setting, and events, identify who is telling the story at various points, and compare and contrast the experiences of characters in a story.

What better way to help students apply these standards to the stories they read than to have them practice being the storytellers themselves as puppeteers?

Imagination and logical thought come together for students to engage in the creation of a story with puppets. They are building vocabulary, planning, sequencing, and using creative thinking from the moment they become a puppeteer. In addition, collaborating with peers is building social and emotional confidence with their peers.

Providing these beautiful, quality hand puppets to students will empower and inspire them to practice, apply, and master essential language skills.
