Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a rural Northern California school serving students in Kindergarten-2nd grade. There are over 300 students at our school and the teachers here are working hard to make a difference. Our students love coming to school, and our staff is doing everything we can to provide a balanced education for every student.
We are a Title I school where over 70% of our student live in poverty and 60% of our students are English Language Learners.
The students are motivated and want to learn. They love coming to school, and in order to keep it that way, teachers must find ways to engage students and put the fun back in learning. More and more emphasis is being put on state testing and less and less on the individual child in the public school system. In my district, we only receive $250 a year for school supplies. That's roughly $10 per student for the entire year which is not nearly enough to enrich our students education the way they deserve. With your support, I will be to fund this project and provide my students with the supplies they need to have a magical year of learning and growing.
My Project
For the past several years, my class and I have participated in March Book Madness, reading high quality picture books and ranking them in a bracket that mimics a basketball playoff bracket. It's one of my favorite times of the year! This concept was developed by teachers in Ohio and has spread around the globe, thanks to technology! I usually purchase one or two of the books and use the library to borrow the rest. This year, I would like to have a set to keep in my classroom for the remainder of the year.
Instead of returning these books to the library after a few weeks, I'd like my students to be able to access them, reread them, and enjoy them for the rest of the year!
The theme for March Book Madness this year is "Brave and Bold." The stories in these books will give my students both a mirror and window see themselves and peek into other children's lives. And it isn't only this year's class that will benefit. Having a copy of these excellent picture books in my classroom library will also allow future classes of students to benefit from these stories of the brave and the bold!
