This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Where is Japan?" I asked my students. They looked at each other blankly. I looked around my classroom for a map to show them where Japan was, only to realize I did not have one.

I teach two special education classes in a high-need, urban public school with a high percentage of students who are learning to speak English and who are the children of immigrants.

These students thrive on visual and hands-on projects that can only come from a cache of many different materials and supplies.

My Project

The map and globe set would be an invaluable resource for my students. These materials would help them learn about the continents and oceans. They will gain more knowledge of concepts such as latitude and longitude, and time zones. It is important for these students to have some sense of the world beyond what they already know and these tools would be their steps toward understanding.

I remember a time when every classroom had several maps and globes, no matter what subject was being taught.

These days are long gone. With budget cuts and the current emphasis on test prep, things like maps and globes seem less important to the people in charge. Those of us who grew up with the knowledge of continents, countries and states know that it is not being passed down to this generation of students. Your help will make it possible for my students to expand their knowledge of the world.
