My Students

I teach at a middle school in a high-poverty area, but with a fantastic faculty. We are dedicated to our students and have recently been designated as a National School to Watch. Over 50% or our student population receives free or reduced price lunch, and we have around 200 English-as-a-Second-Language students. Our school focuses on being positive and growing in learning.

I teach English Language Development and 8th grade Reading to a diverse group of students, many from other countries.

I also work with students in a Latino crew and during after school sports. As ESL lead in my school, my goal is to help our ELLs thrive academically and socially. I love my students and am so impressed with their resilience as many have gone through a lot of difficult times and still come out fighting.

I have been teaching for 20 years and have found my forever home at this middle school. I am passionate about reading, books, sports, and service. Many of our teachers volunteer their time to mentor kids after school and give them a safe place to be.

My Project

Many of my students, especially English Language Learners are drawn to reading Manga and graphic novels because the pictures make them more accessible. I think the lightheartedness and simplicity of the stories lets them escape the reality of COVID for awhile. Any Manga I have in my classroom library usually has a waiting list to check out.

Manga and graphic novels are a great jumping off point for new and struggling readers.

Once they build confidence and stamina through reading entire manga series or every graphic novel they can find, then they often move on to other, more complex fiction.

As I have seen this progression, I have made sure to build a large Manga and graphic novel section in my classroom library. With the support of donors, I can provide the popular titles my students enjoy.
