Man That's Dope...Dope Sick

My students need 15 copies of "Dope Sick".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are not avid readers. They do not generally pick up books and read. However, after reading the book Monster, by Myers, they were so interested in the stories books could tell. Imagine creating that feeling all over again for middle school students as they connect with the characters so vividly.

My students are 6-8 grade students in middle school, ranging from 11-16 years old.

Most of my students are minorities, most are of free and reduced lunch, and all have a behavioral or emotional disorder. All of my students are in a behavior self-contained classroom, meaning they spend 6 hours a day with me and receive all of the academics with me in the same classroom. Historically, they have failed in school, at home and sometimes they feel like they have failed at life. Most of my students are on or have been on probation. Many have been to detention centers, some to jail. They know how hard life can be, and often they have learned that on their own, as few of them have supportive parents. School is their only chance at changing their lives. However, because of their special needs, conventional learning is not an option. School has to be fun, exciting and most importantly inviting. I have to get them interested before they can ever decide to change.

My Project

By providing the book Dope Sick, you would provide me a chance to teach a book that they are interested in and can relate to. Dope Sick is a book about a 17 year old who has become wrapped up in a drug deal gone bad. He is facing the decisions that he has made. The book would provide so many chances for the students to accomplish a myriad of learning. They would be reading, something that is often a challenge to get them to do. They would be interested and invested in a character they can relate to. I would have a chance to help them explore much of the baggage that they live with on a daily basis. Finally, this book would give me the most awesome opportunity to help them compare the life of drugs to that of education. They desperately need characters that they can relate to and learn from. Please consider donating this book. My students desperately need to look into the mirror and see the choices that they are making, this book may be the best chance I have for some of them.

Please consider donating this book to my class to help students see the choices that they are making and how it truly effects an entire lifetime.

These students are at such a pivotal point in their lives. For some, if they do not change now, they will never make a change. Please donate this book for our class, the idea of someone giving to them is so rare, that your generosity in and of itself could positively impact them. Please take this opportunity to positively impact these students.
