A world apart...I teach a middle school, grades 6-8, self-contained special education class for students with behavioral and emotional disabilities. My students are with me approximately 6 hours a day, only leaving for such classes as PE or music. In addition, my students are generally below grade level. Their behavior concerns have taken away from their learning for quite some time, leaving them short-fallen academically as well. My students range from ages 11-15 and have all of the expected middle school difficulties, with the addition of behavior and emotional disabilities. Some of my students have already had criminal charges and been involved with the juvenile court systems. My students do not come from homes that support them, emotionally or academically. Not one of my students is being raised in a traditional family home, with a mother and father present. This adds yet another challenge.
