MalletSTATION For Percussionists!

Help me give my students a Pearl EM1 MalletSTATION for mallet percussion practice. This instrument will allow percussionists to practice quietly or even silently on a digital version of the mallet/keyboard percussion instruments, like the marimba or xylophone.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The percussionists in the Quail Hollow Bands are incredibly hardworking and capable musicians, and are specially selected by me to become percussionists. They have the difficult challenge of learning multiple different instruments simultaneously while wind instrumentalists typically only study one. Learning the keyboard percussion instruments is particularly challenging - they must memorize the layout of an unlabelled keyboard, learn to read music and look at the bars simultaneously in order to sight read, and learn proper playing technique, from mallet grip fundamentals to striking with different velocities or in different areas of the bars.

The MalletSTATION will help both beginner and advanced percussionists to master ALL of those techniques.

This electronic instrument's layout mirrors that of the acoustic keyboards like the xylophone, allowing students to practice learning the notes of the keyboard, playing from written notation, learning scales, and more while playing it. Although it is an electronic instrument, the MalletSTATION is designed to respond differently to different strokes and velocities, allowing students to practice appropriate technique.

Most importantly, the instrument allows for quiet or even silent (using headphones) practice. This can allow percussionists to practice on it while the wind section is working on something else. Often, in full band rehearsals, percussionists have no choice but to wait while other instrument sections rehearse sections of the music where percussionists rest, or while other sections work on things like tone and intonation.

This instrument will allow percussionists to get more practice during the school day on keyboard instruments, keeping them occupied during full band rehearsals and allowing them an opportunity for individual practice when they may not have a keyboard instrument at home to practice on.
