My Students

Kate DiCamillo writes, "Making friends in a new town is never easy, but when Opal adopts a stray dog, she learns that friendship and forgiveness can sneak up on you like a sudden storm." Help my 3rd graders get to know the characters in "Because of Winn Dixie" and develop a relationship with the character and books!

My students are curious, eager learners.

Our new reading program is teaching our students to put all they have learned to the test. They are being challenged to understand characters, their problems, and how they resolve those issues. Students are learning to dig deeper into their own thinking to relate to characters and understand how the story fits together.

My Project

The students need to get their hands on the book to dig in and study the characters in our Character Study Unit. The kids need to have the book in their hands to practice the skills and strategies I teach with the mini-lessons.

They will use the books to find text evidence to support their theories about the characters' traits and motivations.

Our goal is to get the students to dig deeper into their thinking to become more critical thinkers. We will study themes, character traits, and compare characters. They will analyze characters and learn to relate to the characters they study.
