I teach second-grade at Woodlake Elementary School in Mandeville, Louisiana. Many of our families were affected by Hurricane Katrina, whether in loss of power or loss/damage to their homes. We are still adjusting to life after Katrina as we anxiously anticipate the end of hurricane season in October!
Math concepts and skills are an important part of second grade. Using the Investigations series our students receive a lot of hands-on math instruction, but we are limited in the amount of materials we have to teach the lessons. Last year I received a wonderful donation of math center activities from some of our DonorsChoose sponsors…the children loved working with math in new ways! I would like to continue that idea with a new set of hands-on math games and activities that are produced by the makers of LEGOs building blocks.
Children of all ages love to use LEGOs to build whatever they can imagine. I remember doing the same thing as a child! Now LEGO has created a series of math sets that provide children hands-on practice with a variety of math concepts using their favorite building tools.
I am requesting four different sets of varying levels to allow for differentiated instruction in my classroom. These sets will be used each year by my students. Since I also work with the before school program and summer camp at our school, many other children will have the opportunity to use the materials.
We appreciate your generosity in partnering with us as we continue to “make math work” for us!
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
