Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my classroom know they are entering a place where their ideas are valued and their efforts are validated. I try to make the place where these students spend the majority of their day feeling comfortable and welcoming. Because my students have a variety of learning styles, I try to give them as much choice as possible.
Education is the most valuable weapon we can arm our students with to change the world.
My goal as a teacher is to provide multiple opportunities for making my students not only better learners, but better all around humans.
My Project
For many students, math isn't the easiest subject to learn. There are a lot of standards that require students to use mental math strategies to solve problems. Some students may not quite have the ability to mentally solve problems.
By providing students with tangible objects that make math meaningful, students are able to increase their ability to mentally solve problems in the future.
For example, my students are required to understand place value up to the hundreds place. It would be very hard for me to draw hundreds of circles or have students count out hundreds of counters to solve each problem. However, having base ten blocks eliminates the problem of representing large numbers in a much easier to understand way. Also, having a large easel to be able to adhere magnetic math manipulatives will help students visually see what they are learning about. I'm excited to give my students the tools they need to succeed!
