Making Math POP-ular!

Help me give my students the ever POP-ular pop-it game boards for math.

My Students

I teach in a wonderful school that's located in a small, rural area. Our school is full of caring, inquisitive, and amazing students. They brighten my day and make coming to work something that I love doing daily. I teach third grade and I cannot imagine a more perfect age group to work with. My students are at the age at which they are gaining independence, but are still eager to learn and soak up the world around them. I learn just as much from them as they do from me.

Benjamin Franklin once said, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn." That is my goal for my kiddos each school year.

I want each of them to be totally engrossed and involved in the learning process so that their lives will be forever changed because of what they have learned.

My Project

This year I have set a personal goal to create new and exciting math games to engage my students during math workshop time. I've turned classic board games such as Connect Four and Guess Who into math versions. My students love playing with hot-wheels racetracks as they answer math questions and move their cars around the game board. I am always on the lookout for additional games that I can adapt or create to grab their attention and get them ready to engage in a math activity.

Some of the hottest items on the market for kids right now are the fidget toys called POP-ITS!

My own children love them, and my 3rd graders do too! It seems that kids of all ages are so intrigued by these simple fidget toys. I came across these POP-IT game boards the other day and had a lightbulb moment. How much fun would it be to create math games to use with POP-IT game boards?

For this particular project, I am requesting several game boards that can be used for a 2-player game, and also some that can be used for a 4-player game. The game boards can be used with any math standard that we are working on. All I will have to do is create game cards with questions/answers for the students to use during the game and...TA-DA...Math time will become the most POP-ular time of our school day!
