As students follow Auggie's journey, they begin to see the world from someone else's perspective. This helps them better understand differences in others and reflect on their own actions, encouraging a more inclusive and respectful classroom environment.\r\n\r\nSocially and emotionally, Wonder helps students build compassion. It creates opportunities to talk about bullying, friendship, and standing up for others. Many students see themselves in the characters, which can boost confidence and help them feel less alone in their own experiences.\r\n\r\nFinally, having a classroom set ensures equity. Every student has equal access to this impactful story. By turning traditional lessons into immersive experiences, students are able to connect academic concepts to real-world or highly engaging scenarios, which leads to stronger retention and excitement for learning.\r\n\r\nFor example, transforming the classroom into a March Madness-style tournament to teach lines and angles allowed students to actively participate in identifying, comparing, and classifying angles in a competitive and collaborative environment. The structure motivated students to stay engaged while reinforcing key geometry concepts through repeated exposure and discussion.\r\n\r\nSimilarly, using a fantasy football theme to teach fractions gave students a familiar and exciting context to apply mathematical skills. By analyzing player stats and making decisions based on fractional data, students were able to see the practical application of fractions, which increased both their understanding and their investment in the lesson.\r\n\r\nThe restaurant menu transformation for adding and subtracting decimals created a real-world scenario where students practiced math skills in a meaningful way. Acting as customers or restaurant owners, students calculated totals, made decisions, and solved problems they could easily relate to, reinforcing their computational accuracy and problem-solving abilities.\r\n\r\nOverall, classroom transformations promote higher engagement, encourage collaboration, and make abstract concepts more concrete. They also support different learning styles by incorporating movement, creativity, and hands-on experiences. These types of lessons not only improve academic outcomes but also help students develop a positive attitude toward learning.","fullyFundedDate":1746490163647,"projectUrl":"project/transforming-learning-spaces/9305599/","projectTitle":"Transforming Learning Spaces","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Day","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp6413349_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1563456573468","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6413349"},{"teacherId":2120361,"projectId":9477977,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for the Gooney Bird Greene book sets you gave to our classroom! We read the first book in this series as a class novel study at the very beginning of the school year. We are currently using the book sets for our book clubs. They all chose one of the other books in the series to read. They were excited because they had already been introduced to the series, so they were familiar with the setting, characters, etc. I love when I can get kids hooked on a series, and they are craving more to read!\r\nThis series is also so neat because in each book, Gooney Bird's class is learning about a specific topic (so while the kids are reading this book for book club, they are also learning facts about geography, fables, poetry, the human body, etc.). My students find it so neat that in one book Gooney Bird's class is reading the book Aesop's Fables because we have read that this year in class also. In another book, they are learning all the body systems such as the skeletal system, nervous system, digestive system, etc. In 4th grade science, one of their units is on the human body. So they just think these books are perfect and they have so many connections with them!\r\nThank yo again so very much for this incredible donation to our class book club collection.
