My students need a variety of locks, 5 book safes, 5 UV markers, and 5 UV lights in order to collaboratively escape a variety of challenging, creative and fun educational games.
In my role as the Secondary Mathematics Instructional Specialist, I have the privilege of working with nearly 1,000 middle schoolers, 1,300 high schoolers and 25 amazingly talented and dedicated math teachers in Middletown, Connecticut.
On a daily basis, I collaborate with math teachers to create and execute meaningful, creative, fun and differentiated student-based activities in the math classrooms.
Recently, a colleague introduced several math teachers and I to the Breakout EDU Kit- "a unique collection of resettable locks, boxes, and items that can be used to play 100s of immersive learning games." Most importantly, all Breakout EDU games require students to use four essential life skills: think critically, collaborate, be creative, and communicate with their peers.
Due to huge budget cuts and the current state of public education in the US, Middletown does not have the funds to purchase the supplies to create these amazing Breakout EDU Kits for the math teachers.
My Project
Using Breakout EDU kits will allow students to work with the math curriculum in a new and exciting way! Working collaboratively in teams, students must use clues and puzzles to solve the mystery. Breakout EDU kits use locked boxes, a wide variety of locks (such as directional, word, color, and digit locks), invisible ink and UV flashlights (in order to read the "hidden messages") to engage students in the learning as they work together to succeed in unlocking the box.
These supplies will allow me to create 5 Breakout EDU kits to be used in the math classrooms at the two middle schools and the high school.
It also allows for more participation and student engagement. Throughout the game, students will need to "think outside of the box" with their classmates to solve mysteries and puzzles related to math and other content areas. Please help me and the math teachers bring more excitement and creativity into the classrooms.
