This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."
--Benjamin Franklin
This quote speaks volumes to beliefs about education.
As a special education high school math teacher, I work with students from many diverse backgrounds, with individual needs that are just as diverse.
However, they are all performing below grade level in math, and in many cases this has caused an apathy and dislike for the subject.
My goal is to get my students to once again enjoy math, by using fun and engaging activities that allow my students to participate in hands-on learning that provides both remediation and rigor.
My Project
My students aren't the kind that learn by taking notes or listening to a teacher talking. They need math manipulatives like individual dry-erase boards, fraction tiles, and probability dice to experience concepts in a different way. They learn by doing, and these resources will help them with that.
My students also need organizational materials like binders, dividers, folders, and notebooks to help them build and develop their organizational skills. Many have difficulties with executive functioning, and I want to teach them skills that will serve them well throughout their education and throughout their life.
For students who have consistently struggled with school, I hope these resources will help once again make school a positive experience for them, and help them see the importance of education.
