Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The key to mathematical success in fifth grade is fact fluency. Knowing their basic multiplication, division, addition and subtractions facts by heart makes tackling multi-step math problems so much more manageable. Unfortunately, in today's digital age where so many kids have access to smart phones and tablets, they are less motivated to memorize their math facts. But they still need these basic skills, and knowing them by heart rather than needing to calculate them makes such an impact.

Math fact fluency frees up cognitive resources for higher-level problem solving, increases accuracy, and reduces math anxiety.

Math gets easier when students can focus on the procedure and not the computations.

This project puts the tools to math fact fluency in my students' hands. Games, dice, dominoes, magnets, flash cards, bingo chips and other hands-on tools make practice fun. Other supplies in this project tackle the practical side - colorful paper for "multiply the rainbow" tracking, place value dry erase boards for small group practices, and large-scale number lines for whole group instruction.

The first 20 minutes of my class every day are devoted to math fact fluency. With your help, I want to make that time COUNT by having all of my students engaged and working on committing to memory the facts that will make fifth grade math (and beyond) achievable for all of them.
