This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are so excited about art: when asked what their favorite class is, most of them reply, "art." Whether this is because they don't have access to art supplies at home, they need a break from their day-to-day activities, or any reason in between, they love art. Being from a school that is working hard to bring them back up to their grade level, this can be quite rigorous at times and cause students to burn out. Art is their escape and these students cherish their time there.

My students work hard and are invested in their projects.

They often even get frustrated if their work doesn't turn out perfectly. I am working hard to show these students that even if they aren't the best in the room at whatever they are doing, they are scholars working hard to improve their skills. I'm so lucky to be able to work with a group as sweet and excited as this one!

My Project

My students go through supplies at a surprising rate. We use these supplies on a daily basis and students need them to create their artwork. Between supplies breaking from overuse, general lack of access to quality items, and lending materials out to other classrooms and students, we are in great need of these items. When I came into the classroom at the beginning of the year, I was shocked at the supplies. We have specialty items but are missing the most basic supplies we use on a daily basis.

Every day, without fail, students ask me for these items.

We ran out of pencils a month ago and all of our Sharpies have died. Our rulers have had the numbers rubbed off of them. We haven't had tissues in the classroom for months. All of these supplies will be used on a daily basis and will improve the quality of our classroom.

I am also asking for a gift card to Teachers Pay Teachers so I can get different ideas to create new and exciting projects for my students to enjoy art more. This will also take some stress off of me and let me be able to focus more fully on being present with my students.
