Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The tweens that attend my school are extraordinary students who need an exciting learning area to promote reading. Many of the students here are reading below grade level and are reluctant readers. The demographics are diverse: 25% African American, 70% Hispanic, and a total of 83% are economically disadvantaged.

These students need a positive learning environment to learn in and create in.

By helping fund this project, we can help create an engaging learning area, known as a Makerspace, where these students can create, read, discover, and set foundations for becoming lifelong learners.

My Project

Students need an engaging learning environment to learn in. The first thing I want to create for my students is a Makerspace area. This area will allow them to research ideas, build, explore and create using LEGO bricks, chalk, books from the library, all while communicating and exploring.

Students in the Makerspace can test ideas, create learning, communicate with peers, and learn together!

Currently, our library does not have a space for students to create, and this will area will be just that.

Makerspaces are important because they promote creativity and learning. “Ultimately, the interdisciplinary and empowering natures of these Makerspaces can help prepare youth for a future we can’t yet imagine” (Davee, Regalla & Chang, 2015, p. 10).
