My Project

The "Makers & Mentors" project happens when the "Big Buddy" acts as the mentor, and the Kindergartener has the opportunity to be creative. These projects aren't just crafts; they teach communication skills, develop hands-on learning, and form lasting relationships.

The goal of the "Makers & Mentors" project is to foster the developmental needs of the Kindergarteners with the leadership growth of the big Buddies.

Kindergarteners feel safe, welcomed, and have a sense of belonging when they see their trusted older buddy in school. The big Buddies have the opportunity to practice skills, such as active listening and communicating, to help a younger child.

The goals move beyond just finishing a project and focus on the magic of collaborative creation. For their first year in school, having lunch together and working on crafts with their buddies has created a safe and nurturing environment for them.

When my students create projects with their big buddies, the "art" is just the vehicle to build relationships. The bins will be used to house the snacks and art supplies/crafts, which provide easy access for our kindergartners. The printer ink and photo paper will be used to print pictures of our big and little buddies to put in the frames and end of year memory book, so they will have memories of their special friendship made in their first year of school!

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
