My students need a MakerBot 3D printer for the art department at MHS. My art students are interested in learning to integrate technology into three-dimensional art.
The art department at MHS offers a variety of art courses. Full year courses include Art One, Art Two, Painting, Graphic Design and upper level studio courses. Other courses include sculpture and ceramic classes. We would use the 3D printer mostly in the sculpture and studio classes.
Our art students are mostly college bound.
Some of the students that are involved in the art department are planning on studying art at the college level while others are interested in rounding out their education. Many of the students who take art courses at MHS take art courses for more than one year and many take art all four years of high school. The students have won many awards and recognition in various local and national art competitions.
My Project
Students will use the MakerBot 3D printer to learn how technology is changing the way sculptors and designers work. The MakerBot is a desktop 3D printer that can be used to print designs that the students design on a computer. It may also be used to print objects that the students have created by hand and then scanned and placed in the computer. These scanned images can then be manipulated in 3D software to create new forms that are then printed. The MakerBot printer can be used to create objects that have only existed in a virtual space. This allows the students to hold and see their computer designed objects. 3D software, printers and robotic carving machines are revolutionizing the way sculptors, architects and industrial designers work having one in our class room will introduce our students to this technology.
The MakerBot 3D printer will improve our learning environment by exposing our students to current technology for creating three dimensional products and art.
Students will be able to work with technology that was previously too expensive for an educational environment. Our students will be better prepared to work with this current technology if they decide to pursue art or another three-dimensional design field.
