This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students defy the odds. We are located in the South Bronx, within one of the poorest districts in the country. The poverty and violence rates in our neighborhood are sky-high compared to the rest of the state. Many of our students come to school because it is a safe place where they receive basic human needs.

Statistically, our students are not supposed to succeed, but if you took one step into our classroom, you can see that they are not another statistic.

These kids are motivated and love to learn! Unfortunately, our school is a bit outdated. We are still using whiteboards and poster paper to write down notes. We are using textbooks and outdated worksheets in our classrooms. I want to make school fun, live, and interactive. Our classrooms need to be revamped, and our kids need more programs to keep them out of harm's way outside of school. We need programs in sports, science, journalism, math, and music. We need to balance out the academics with the social aspects of life and help cultivate active exemplary citizens.

My Project

It seems like the COVID numbers are going back up and all of us here in NY are either staying blended or transitioning to fully remote. You would think working from home would be great, but its the worst thing that could of happened to us as educators. Whats even more concerning is when the blended students come to school they express the technological issues that they have... IN SCHOOL! Every day I have to give my personal computer to my students just so they can get on a Google Meets, work on PearDeck, or simply type up an assignment on Google Docs. Some tablets have software glitches that don't allow these add ons and applications to work, and even less on the school network. This is why I am asking for a set of HP All-in- one desktops for our blended classroom. It will be like having a mini computer lab for our middle schoolers that decided to go blended. In addition to that I am asking for ethernet splitters and switches so that these desktops can have a fast direct internet connection. The ethernet connection also allows students to access Youtube, which is used in many online lessons; these videos would be blocked if the computers were connected via wifi. I would also want to set aside 2 desktops for any student that desperately needs a device at home for remote learning.
