When you learned chemistry and physics, did you rush home to share the interesting things you learned with your family and friends? With the help of neodymium magnets, our students will learn about the extraordinary magnetic properties of everyday objects and leave with new excitement for science!
My students attend an urban high school dedicated to giving all students the opportunity to obtain a top notch education in both arts and academics.
My students are hardworking, creative individuals who come from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. I love working with my students as I try to make my chemistry and physics classes as fun, engaging, and meaningful as a dance, drama, music, or art class. My students come to the school to embrace their artistic passion and it is my hope they that leave their science classes feeling just as inspired and excited.
My Project
I am requesting 22 sets of neodymium magnets to be used by both chemistry and physics students during hands-on laboratory experiments that help students discover more about the world around them. These powerful magnets will be used in chemistry to study how elements in the materials around us behave differently when alone or in a compound. We will also be exploring how properties of matter are retained in mixtures. One experiment we will perform will allow us to extract iron from fortified cereal. These powerful magnets will allow us to examine the world around us and how it changes as the composition of materials changes.
In physics these magnets will be used to illustrate the magnetic properties and workings of old equipment. With these magnets, magnetic field lines can be seen suspended in fluids or shown in spectacular colors on old CRT screens, demonstrating how everyday objects interact with magnetic fields.
These magnets are so important to my students because they will allow students to connect abstract information about elements, compounds, and mixtures into tangible scientific discoveries they will make on their own.
Additionally students will be able to learn more about the mysterious magnetic force, magnetic fields, friction, and the magnetic poles of the earth. With these magnets, my students will be able to see that sometimes science is even cooler than magic!
