My Students

My students are learning and growing so quickly, and are at such a critical developmental stage for reading and writing. This year, students are still struggling with the inequities related to covid. They come to first grade not knowing letters and sounds, or not having been exposed to instruction in a real classroom due to online learning. I have noticed that the more hands-on learning opportunities students can have, the better they respond to instruction and learning new concepts. Over the last two years, students have come to my classroom with real learning deficits, and it is worrisome. Students are thirsty for hands on learning activities that will engage their minds and hands, and allow them to interact and learn with their peers.

Unfortunately, students do not have their own individual magnetic boards or alphabet letters for them to use in our classroom, as well as other hands on learning tools.

During the time of Covid, it would be amazing for students to have their own sets of tools to use during learning time. Instructional time is precious, and if students had their own tools for learning, we wouldn't have to use instructional time sanitizing throughout the day.

My Project

I teach in a dual-immersion classroom, where we have to use our learning and instructional time wisely. I count every single minute in the day and really dislike using time in an unproductive way. I have 52 students who are learning how to read, write, and spell. It would be hugely beneficial if students had their very own set of magnetic letters and magnetic whiteboards for them to use during word work and word building time.

Students need tools for hands on learning, especially at such a critical developmental stage in reading and writing.

The last few years have been a challenge, and much learning has had to happen virtually at home. Students now have the opportunity to be in school, using their own supplies and tools, without the risk of sharing germs and spreading infections. Students will get the foundational skills needed by using manipulatives and working with hands on learning tools.
