Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my 26th year in education. I love teaching and I love getting to know the students and their families at my school. Most of all, I love seeing students become excited about learning to read and finding success in reading.

My position as a reading strategist gives me the opportunity to work with and influence many students across multiple grade levels.

I also get the opportunity to work with all the teachers at my school and help them implement hands-on literacy instruction.

My Project

Funding my project will provide magnetic letter kits to teachers and students to use in their classrooms and for at home learning, as well. Why Magnetic Letters? Magnetic letters provide opportunities for hands-on learning which are much more suited for the way young children learn than workbooks and flashcards.

The benefits of magnetic letter manipulatives are incredible.

Not only are they fun, but they are also a great teaching tool. Letter manipulatives are as important as having a visual alphabet around! These small pieces are setting the stage for reading, writing, visual discrimination, and more literacy foundations.

In older students, magnetic letters provide students the opportunities to manipulate letters and sounds in words to make new words. Through explicit teaching magnetic letters provide students the ability to explore how letters work together to form words and how we can manipulate the sounds to create new words. Then students can apply the knowledge acquired while manipulating and exploring magnetic letters in words to help them solve unfamiliar words in their reading increasing their vocabulary and literacy knowledge.
