My Students

The students in my class are bright, charismatic kids who are looking to express their voices any way they can. They love group projects, getting to share their ideas, and feeling a sense of control in their own education.

My classroom is a space where students can feel safe to express their ideas/opinions and grow as learners.

Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and lack exposure to a variety of genres in literature, but the drive to learn is there.

My Project

The magical world of Harry Potter introduces readers to the idea of a world beyond their own. It provides hope, humor, struggle, survival, and all at the ripe age of 11 years old.

It is my hope to introduce the Harry Potter series to my classroom, reignite the magic of reading, and have my students learn from the Great Albus Dumbledore that "there is light even in the darkest of times."

These novels will become the focus of a unit, where students work together by “house”, chosen by the “sorting hat” to encourage each other to finish assignments for "house points." They will experience group projects, informal/formal writing assignments and partner work. The Harry Potters, while entertaining, will introduce my students to new vocabulary, strengthen their inferential thinking skills, expose them to literary devices, and activate their imaginations.

Harry Potter will help my students to find the magic in reading.
