My Students

I have 48 Spanish 2 students who are adapting to learning in a constantly changing pandemic situation. My students are from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds but share interests such as sports, animé, music, and other hobbies. It has been a rough few years for these kids as they have had to deal with remote learning, hybrid learning, quarantines, and re-learning how to operate in social situations. We are restricted by what we can do in the classroom as far as distance and sharing resources, but the students have really enjoyed hands-on activities/materials as a break from so much technology. Due to the heavy digital focus of the past few years and the increased opportunity to bury themselves in Tik Tok and other social media, my students have suffered from reduced academic stamina and attention spans. For this reason, I look for anything novel and compelling to capture and keep their attention and make Spanish relevant to their everyday lives.

My Project

The paper editions of these magazines will allow my students to use their Spanish to connect with the Spanish speaking world and see the relevance of the Spanish language and culture in their own lives. These magazines utilize current events and rich cultural content written in an accessible way for learners of Spanish. While I intent to use the print versions most in class, the digital versions also offer extension activities that allow students to go further with the magazine content.

The print version of the magazine is not available alone, but having the digital version as well will allow my quarantined students (this rotates and happens quite often) to access the same material as my in-person students.
