My Students

All third graders need to understand how analog clocks measure time and to solve practical problems involving elapsed time.

We have a classroom of great citizens and future leaders.

They are diverse linguistically, economically, and academically, etc. Their families come from many parts of the world: China (4), Korea (3), Indonesia (1), India (2), Russia (1), and Venezuela (1). We learn much from one another. The children are respectful of each other and learning to be appreciative of their differences.

My Project

Some students are overwhelmed when trying to understand 1)how analog clocks work and 2) how to measure elapsed time. The requested materials include individual sized clocks with cogs that allow children to move the hour and minute hands in sync as they do on a real clock. The Judy Discovery Digital Clock is large enough for whole class instruction and relates digital to analog clocks. The Watch It! Elapsed Time Clock has two faces for the start and ending times and gives the elapsed time so the children can better understand elapsed time and self-check their answers.

Two of the most difficult concepts for a third grader to grasp are: 1) how analog clocks work, and 2) how to measure elapsed time on an analog clock.

They need to be able understand how analog clocks work and to apply elapsed time concepts to their own personal lives and to classroom math activities.
