I teach at a magnet school for gifted and high-achieving students. We serve students in grades 6-12 from throughout our district. Students test for admission, and most students are functioning above the 90th percentile. All students are working at least one grade level above their actual age. The students in my school are a true melting pot of nationalities, religions, and economic levels, but the common trait that they have is the love of being challenged and learning new things. My students challenge each other, and me, to learn more and do their very best, both in and out of the classroom!
I have a group of students that wanted to learn to code - and we have no opportunities for that during instructional time plus I have very little knowledge of coding! Not allowing those obstacles to stop us, I did some research and found that my students could watch videos that guided them step-by-step in coding. I also began opening my room during lunch for my "coding krewe".
On any given day, I have several kids who want to learn to code during their lunch hour.
With more Chromebooks, I will have opportunities for even more students to be able to work at the same time.
Ideally, we will find a way to offer computer coding classes to our middle school students - but in the meantime - having a lunch option is working well for my students!
