Lunch Bunch Book Club

My students need 15 copies of each of 4 books for our book club, such as "The Tale of Despereaux".

I am a media specialist at an elementary school teaching Pre-K - 5th grade. Sixty-nine percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The transiency rate is very high. Many students are being raised in a single parent home with multiple siblings or raised by adults other than a parent (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster parents). Our school is located in a suburb of a large metropolitan city.

This is my second year as a media specialist. Last year I had a group of students who were highly motivated to start a book club. This year, I have many reluctant readers in all grades. As part of the incentive of participating in the book club, I would like to offer books that students may keep. We have had several book fairs and I found that students loved to purchase books because they do not own very many books. With budget cuts and restrictions on funding it is more difficult to get multiple copies of books for our book club. I would like to encourage students to begin a personal library at their homes.

In the past I have used some school funding and my personal money to purchase books for the book club. Books purchased with school funds may not be given to students. I kept the books I purchased because I didn't want to purchase them again each year. Having a personal library would encourage a love of books, encourage students to take care of books and would be an incentive for students to start earning money to purchase more books. We will do some bake sales to earn money for refreshments and "field trips." After reading The Tale of Despereaux, I plan to take them to see the movie in order to compare it to the book.

Your help would ensure that my students have a book to love and make a difference in their lives. I believe that putting books in the hands of children makes a difference in their lives as it becomes "their" book. They feel a sense of pride in their possessions and this will encourage their love of books and reading. As a young child I was a reluctant reader and I was given books as a child. Even though I didn't immediately begin devouring the books, I kept them, took care of them, treasured them, and added to the collection. Then, one day it all came together. I started reading and haven't stopped. To this day my favorite gifts are special books. When I had a classroom I always gave the students books for their birthday and for Christmas. I can't do that for 600+ students. Making the books a special presentation for the students would give the books more value and encourage further reading.
