"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss
My students begin and end their school day by reading books and I would like to encourage them to continue their love of reading and watch where their learning takes them!
My classroom is a First grade classroom in a Title I school.
Many of the students in my class are English as a Second Language learners and the majority of my class receives free or reduced breakfast and lunch. The students in my class are bright, curious and eager to learn. We have only been in school for a few months and my class has had a wonderful start to the year by working hard to develop their skills and strategies. They love to read! It is difficult for my students to practice their reading at home as many of them do not have books at home to practice with. Also many of the parents in our area need to work multiple jobs to support their families so often the students do not have academic support at home. Therefore it is important that I do my best to reach all of my students and help them to learn as much as possible each day that they are in my classroom.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting would be used during our Literacy centers. These centers are a great way to help each student learn at his/her own level, which in a classroom like mine with students on many different levels is essential. The read along stories for the listening center are a wonderful way for students to be exposed to different types of literature as well as giving my English learners wonderful examples of fluency and expression. Big books are a favorite in my classroom and it would be wonderful to add more to our library. Students like to read them independently or with a buddy. The large print is wonderful for developing concepts of print and they are also great tools for shared reading. The phonics materials will allow my students to develop their phonemic awareness which will help them to improve their reading and writing. They will be able to practice identifying sounds and using different sounds to make words.
These donations will my students develop the literacy skills that are necessary if they are to become successful readers and writers.
Having the materials in the classroom will give my students the opportunity to grow and learn that they desperately need. My goal is for all of my students to be reading on grade level by the end of the year. I know that having these materials in the classroom would greatly help my class achieve our goal.
