Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever been in a foreign country, trying to read something in a different language wishing it was available in your native language? Welcome to a day in the life of my students. As the newcomer English development teacher at my school site, I see students who have just moved to the United States for the first time. They are often timid, and shy, and are nervous to enter a new school that is very often so different than the one they left behind in their home country.
One of the things I use to help make this huge life transition easier for them is to give them access to books in their native language.
I can't explain the difference in their faces, when during that first week in my class, we sit and read a book together, often reading a comedy, bringing smiles to their formerly timid selves.
While they learn and develop English literacy and expand their English vocabulary in my classroom, providing them access to books in their native language helps foster a love of reading and reading for enjoyment.
