Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Open our minds and ears to phonemic awareness, phonics, letter recognition and most importantly to the love of reading!

I am teaching preschool and pre-kindergarten students (between 3 and 5 years old) in a head-start classroom in Washington, D.C.

where over 90% are considered economically disadvantaged. This is an adorable age; my students are excited to learn to read and are especially eager to explore the world around them.

My Project

My students take pride in their growing independence. Many are fascinated about the idea of being able to read on their own, however most are not yet ready for this task. Providing these students with this collection of audio letter books will pacify their desire to read by themselves and will also challenge them to think critically about print concepts and phonics. Furthermore, these materials will be used to establish a permanent listening center in our classroom which students will be able to experiment with daily. All of my students will benefit immensely from this continual exposure to modeled reading fluency as well as to the association of letters with letter-sounds.

This project will absolutely encourage my students to take pleasure in reading.

Help push my students to take pride in their literacy skills and to encourage their growth as developing readers.
