This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My middle school students are English Language Learners and mainly come from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cape Verde, and El Salvador. Many are newcomers to the United States and have diverse educational backgrounds in their home countries.
Although my students speak many different first languages and are at various levels of English, they are all eager to learn!
They have a high attendance rate and enjoy coming to school. We all believe that being multilingual is a tremendous asset in today's world!
My Project
One of our school's focus areas this year is to increase students' independent reading. The more we read, the better we get at it! This is especially true for ESL students. I'm proud of my kids for striving to read a minimum of twenty books during the school year. We try to have DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Time in class every day to make reading an enjoyable routine.
My students would love to have a cozy book nook in our classroom where they could read comfortably.
I believe that having bean bag chairs and a rug in a well-lit spot by the windows would encourage my students to say, "Hey! Is it DEAR Time yet?"
