My Students

My multiage fourth and fifth grade classroom has students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and home languages. Students present a wide range of needs, and my job is to help all of them learn. One of the ways I try to engage and challenge all students is with the living history museum.

There are about 425 students in our suburban elementary school.

A third of our students come from homes that struggle with poverty, and there are at least sixteen different languages spoken in students’ homes. My team teacher and I work with approximately 50 students, and we group students in a variety of ways to try to meet different needs: by interest, by skill level, or by social needs. Some of my students are actively involved learners, and some struggle to engage in school. Because of the diversity of needs, projects need to be accessible to all. The history museum is one project that allows all to participate, and students remember this experience years later.

My Project

Our living history museum alternates each year between a focus on state history or U.S. history. Based on background knowledge and introductory information learned in social studies, students choose a topic to learn about in depth. In small groups using Google Docs, they research and take notes on important information they want to convey to others. Next, they use Google Docs to collaboratively write scripts to engage the audience in a specific scene while learning about that time period. As they work to memorize their scripts, they use Google Presentation to create slides with captioned images (taken from primary sources when possible with those sources cited) that will help the audience understand the information presented in the play. These slides are projected behind the student actors during the performance. They also create summary posters for their audience to view as they are entering the performance. Finally, community members and I help students get costumes and rehearse.

These three Chromebooks will provide students with more access to the technology necessary to complete this project.

Students can use Chromebooks for research, collaborative and independent writing about their time period (including their scripts), creating presentation slides, and generating captions for their posters.
