This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hard-working, funny, crazy, and bright. They love school and their teachers. Their parents have taught them the importance of persistence, honesty, and patience. My students live in the Fruitvale in Oakland, CA, a neighborhood that is overpoliced and underserved. The majority speak English as a second language. First languages for them include Mam, Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Spanish, and Tagalog. Nearly all of them receive free or reduced price lunch.

These children deserve access to the resources normally reserved for wealthier students.

My students are motivated by a desire to succeed and attend college. The other teachers and​ I hold very high expectations for them, and we are delighted to see their faces everyday. Getting more resources for our classroom is an important part of showing them what they can hope for in life.

My Project

For four years I have taught kindergarten using many phonics and phonemic awareness curricula. I've used programs called SIPPS, Heggerty, and The Fountas & Pinnell Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study System. My students and I have benefited from our experience using all of these curricula. However, none of these curricula include a systematic, research-based method for teaching letter name or letter sound knowledge.

I need a curriculum that fills in the gaps of my current phonics programs.

I need it to teach children their letters in a fun, engaging way and that starts them reading with their phonics knowledge from their first weeks in Kindergarten.

This program was designed by special education professionals, and its purpose was to support students who can't learn the alphabet by rote memorization and have extra needs in visual discrimination. It is also designed to help support dyslexic learners for whom letters and phonics present a special challenge. If you support this, you could be making the best investment in a young person's academic future there could possibly be.
