Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of a very large school district. However, due to our rural location we have limited access to district and community provided services. Many of the museums and other cultural opportunities are too far away for us to participate in.
While geography has restricted access to many of the resources that are available for other students in the district, my students still deserve to experience the many cultures, experiences, and lifestyles present within our district.
The best way for me to ensure this can happen is through authentic text and literature from within these diverse cultures.
My Project
I need literature to provide my students access to the various cultures and life experiences of people around the world. My students need access to rich literature written by authentic voices to expose them to the vast cultural differences and similarities that cover the great expanse of our world.
It is so important to allow students windows and mirrors through literature.
Windows provide students a peek into the past, or other cultures, while mirrors reflect their own cultures and lives giving them a sense of belonging. Both are necessary for my young students to begin to find their sense of self in our global society.
