I learned that my students are better able to focus when movement is incorporated. Through a previous project, flexible seating was able to be funded including their favorite seating choice: wiggle stools. They were so loved that all but two broke. I knew that we would need more sturdy stools going forward. Although I often purchase materials for my classroom and students, my heart sank when I saw the cost knowing the stools were outside of my budget. On a whim, I created a Donors Choose project. What could it hurt? I was moved to tears when I checked back to see that my entire project was funded, including the more-sturdy wiggle stools. \r\n\r\nUpon their arrival my students were so excited to try them out. When I told them that someone generously donated to purchase these items just for them they were amazed. \"That is soooo nice of them!\", \"Wow, how kind!\", and \"Bruh, these stools are awesome!\" Since then, these stools have been put to the test, and held up! They're sturdy, help my kiddos get some movement in, and are such a great addition to our classroom. My colleagues have even come in to try them out. \r\n\r\nThe other portion of this project were various fidgets and small sensory toys. As a Special Education teacher one of my goals as is to help students to better understand their own learning styles and tools they can use to help them better succeed. Fidgets have been helpful tools in our classroom. One of my sweet students often struggles to regulate his emotions when he is frustrated or overwhelmed. On a particular day he came to my classroom frustrated that his math work was \"impossible.\" Upon discussion we decided to take a short break to calm down before deciding how to move forward. I offered him a choice of a couple of sensory toys including a squishy cube. He loved being able to use that toy to help relieve some frustration. After a few minutes, he was able to calm down and together we came up with a plan for him to complete his work, including using the squishy cube as long as he continued to work. I watched as he would come to a difficult problem, pick up the cube and squish it in his hands while solving the equation. Pretty soon he was completing more than the required work and was so proud of himself for being able to use his tools to regulate his emotions, push forward, and complete something he was sure he would never be able to do. \r\n\r\nIn Special Education, progress can be small and slow, which means we celebrate all progress! These seemingly insignificant toys and stools have made a big impact in my students' school experience, helping to create an environment where they can be successful.
