Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The feel of a brand-new book in every student's hands! My reading group (29 kids at the same reading level) has never all read the same book at the same time. I'd love to have a book for each so we can fully delve into the same story together.
My students are eager learners who love to read adventure books.
Over 90% of them are English Learners - they are mainly native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. They have fantastic attitudes toward learning, despite the many challenges they face. Our school is a Title 1 school in a working class neighborhood. The majority of the students receive free or reduced-price lunches due to their parents' income level. The school culture is very much dominated by the upcoming state-wide standardized test and our status as a program-improvement school. I wish to convey to my students the joy and excitement of reading and learning. My hope for them is that they become life-long readers, intrinsically motivated to learn, grow, and make a difference (in their neighborhood and in their world).
My Project
I am a new teacher this year, and my classroom library is lacking. These students would greatly benefit from having a class set of books. I am thrilled by the possibilities! I would have groups of students participate in literature circles, book reports, plays, presentations, and group and class discussions. I often feel torn in too many directions when my students are reading different books. I would love to all be experiencing the same story at the same time to fully explore the text and create a cooperative and united classroom environment. My students feel very grown-up when they read "chapter books", and I think that with their own copies of a book like My Father's Dragon, they will feel like the third graders they are becoming! Thanks for considering this project.
Having a full set of books would open up so many possibilities.
I want to create a cohesive unit based on a story to help my students in all areas of literacy -- reading fluently, writing, and speaking. It is so important to give these English learners opportunities to engage in academic conversations, and a class set of books would help the students work together to increase their academic vocabulary and ability to engage with a text.
