My students are eager learners who love to read adventure books. Over 90% of them are English Learners - they are mainly native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. They have fantastic attitudes toward learning, despite the many challenges they face. Our school is a Title 1 school in a working class neighborhood. The majority of the students receive free or reduced-price lunches due to their parents' income level. The school culture is very much dominated by the upcoming state-wide standardized test and our status as a program-improvement school. I wish to convey to my students the joy and excitement of reading and learning. My hope for them is that they become life-long readers, intrinsically motivated to learn, grow, and make a difference (in their neighborhood and in their world).
