Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students LOVE to hear stories! A lot of them have never heard such classic tales as "Little Red Riding Hood" or "Jack and the Beanstalk".

My students are bright, enthusiastic, and caring first-graders who attend a Title I public school in Los Angeles, California.

Most are English Language Learners (ELL) and come from a high poverty population. Some of their parents are illiterate in both English and their native language. Many parents work multiple jobs just to make ends meet and don't have the time to take their children to the local library. These students need exposure to classic stories to build their vocabulary and expand their content knowledge.

My Project

A wireless listening center will allow children to sit anywhere in the classroom and listen to stories being read to them, without bothering those around them, or getting tangled up in cords. They can also use listening comprehension worksheets and other literacy activities without looking over at their neighbor's page and copying their work. Developing academic vocabulary (such as directional and describing words) will impact almost every area of learning, from language arts to science. Due to television and radio being broadcast in different languages, and neighborhoods becoming more isolated by language, children may only hear academic English language from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, and then NEVER hear it again until the next school day. Therefore, every moment in class should be spent broadening horizons, creating common background knowledge, and developing vocabulary.

Help me make stories and language come alive for my students!

Your donation can be the key to sparking a child's creativity and imagination. With your assistance, my students will grow up to be successful life-long learners and be the leaders (and teachers!) of tomorrow. Please donate today!
