This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students in Kindergarten are learning how to love books. By combining music tapes we already have with the written word we will be able to enhance their love of reading. The added books to our listening library would ensure students hear fluent reading allowing for stronger readers as they progress.
Students in my classroom come from high poverty, low literacy education homes.
Any time that we can expose students to forms of literature we are creating a stronger connection to the world as a whole. Many students have frequent times that parents are unable to even afford basic needs. These worries in the home decreases the amount of time parents can spend ensuring the students' school work is on target and/or allow them exposure to the written word.
My Project
An overview of resources includes CD players to join music and literacy together. I am also requesting audiobooks to allow children to hear more books than we could ever read out loud in class. Young children can develop a sense of reading the more often they hear the written word come to life. Students in other homes may have parents who read, but many times our students do not even own books of their own. The DVD player would allow us to add movement and times when the whole class could watch a DVD of a book we have previously read to show that the written word does come to life.
Our students deserve the opportunity to catch up on preschool skills they may not have been offered.
The more words a child has been exposed to the better their reading will become. My goal is to expose them to books in a variety of ways to ensure we have readers and learners for the future.
