This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
A good book, a comfy chair, and some quiet time are a recipe for escape, learning, and exploration of other worlds. My students are reluctant readers who struggle to stay focused when reading independently, and I have room in my classroom to give them a comfortable space to become absorbed in books
My students are inner-city high school students in a high poverty area of a major city in Maryland.
They attend a school in turn-around, which means we are working hard to give them the educational opportunities that they deserve and have not often had in their urban school system. Part of offering them new educational opportunities means giving them chances to experience learning in new ways.
My Project
The furnishings I hope to receive for my classroom will give students a chance to earn the opportunity to step out of their desks and into a good book. They can lounge in beanbag chairs or on the floor on new carpets that will cover my now-bare tile floor, and they can select books from new shelves that will replace my stacks of milk crates.
My hope is that by being both visually appealing and comfortable, my new Literacy Lounge will become a welcoming and engaging place for students to experience everything that is wonderful about reading, to come to enjoy it as an educational and recuperative practice, and will encourage them to become lifelong learners by embracing literacy.
