This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Milton Berle said, "If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door." As a teacher in a Title I district, I am working with my students to build that door. I work with an amazing group of diverse 7th and 8th graders! Funny and witty, they are a testament to what it means to overcome. We are in a neighborhood of mainly low-income families where doors to opportunities are limited, but we are also a community of problem-solvers, strength, and those who dare to overcome the odds that are stacked against them. My students want to build those doors.

My Project

One of the important aspects of reading literature is learning about history through the experiences of children their own age and combining historical events with literacy increases engagement.

Reading Refugee will open up my students to three important historical events through the eyes of children their own age.

Building a connection to the past helps students understand the present and to think critically about their own chooses and future. Students also feel more connected when reading a story that not only represents their age but different cultures. It broadens their understanding and bridges connections.
