Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 2nd grade students reside in the low-income, urban community of South Providence.
My class consists of English Language Learners; all who are classified as a "newcomer", and recently immigrated to the United States.
My ELL students are beginning to develop basic communication skills in English: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
All of my students are from low income households, and participate in the free lunch program. In addition, many of these children have experienced trauma and have difficult home lives. However, despite these challenges, they come to school every day, eager, and willing to learn.
My Project
My students are currently beginning to develop their reading skills in English. Though these skills are practiced daily in school, it would be beneficial for my students to practice reading skills at home. This is a challenge, considering that my students and their parents are non-native English speakers, and lack literacy skills in English. This leaves my students with little academic support at home.
I would like to create literacy bags in which my students would take home with decodable readers to practice reading skills during after school hours.
Included in each reading bag will also be a recording of the book on a CD-ROM. My classroom needs 10 portable CD players in order for the students to be able to listen to the book recordings. Helping our classroom with the funds for this technology would allow my students to listen to stories being read to them at home, to improve their reading ability, and to further acquire the English language.
