My Students

I teach approximately 15 special needs students in Kindergarten through 5th grade in a Title I school. I have a mostly self contained classroom with my students attending grade level periods with general education classrooms for peer modeling, age appropriate vocabulary/content and interaction.

They are excited and motivated to do their best and it's extremely important for them to be successful while interacting with their age appropriate peers in the general education setting.

Small successes lead to larger ones in educational and social settings.

My Project

A lot of my students are extremely low level readers. However, their interest level is more age/grade appropriate. By proving a Kindle Fire and headphones with chapter books loaded, they can participate in the reading during DEAR time with their general education classmates. The headphones can also be taken to the STEAM Lab for participation there and plugged into Chromebooks in the Science lab, Library and General Education classes.

Audio Books benefit students who struggle with reading by removing word decoding anxiety, increasing word exposure, developing grade level appropriate knowledge, and giving students educational independence.

This project will help my students feel more involved with their grade level peers in an academic setting and provide them with the opportunity to discuss books they've listened to with their classmates.
