Lions' Learning Farm: A 4-H Dream Can Come True

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

At our elementary school, the Wings and Wigglers and Little Peeps programs have evolved into the Lions’ Learning Farm. I believe that when children are trusted with meaningful responsibilities, they rise to the occasion.

This now 4-H program is built on one simple belief: our students deserve to feel valued, capable, and inspired every single day.

Many of our students had never had the opportunity to care for animals or grow food before. Through this program, they have learned that their actions matter. When they prepare food for the tortoises, refill the ducks' water, or gently check on the hermit crabs and geckos, they begin to understand that living things depend on them. These daily routines build empathy, patience, and responsibility in ways that traditional lessons cannot replicate.

Providing the proper food and care for our animals supports the animals and the students who care for them. With the right nutrition and supplies, our rescued animals can thrive in the safe environment our students have worked hard to create. At the same time, students gain the opportunity to learn about balanced diets, animal health, habitat maintenance, and environmental stewardship through authentic, hands-on experiences.

When students see the animals healthy and active because of the care they provided, it gives them a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. They begin to understand that compassion and consistency can make a real difference. These experiences open doors to learning about biology, agriculture, veterinary science, and environmental conservation.

Supporting the food and resources needed for our animals helps sustain a learning environment where students feel connected, trusted, and empowered. It allows them to practice kindness, leadership, and responsibility every day. Most importantly, it helps them see that their effort can create a better life for the animals they protect and the world around them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
