Your contributions have done far more than provide materials—they have created transformative experiences for our students.\r\nSince receiving our material, our program has expanded into a full rehabilitation and sustainability initiative. We have rescued three sulcata tortoises and a Holland Lop rabbit, allowing students to learn about proper habitat design, nutrition, and long-term animal care. Students research dietary needs, monitor growth, and adjust feeding schedules using vegetables grown in our own garden beds and a hydroponic system. They are discovering how agriculture, biology, and environmental stewardship are deeply interconnected.\r\nWe have also rescued hermit crabs and thoughtfully introduced isopods into their habitat to establish a balanced ecosystem. Students study the role of decomposers and understand how isopods help break down organic matter, improving environmental health within a closed system. These hands-on lessons make abstract ecological concepts tangible and meaningful.\r\nOur animal care program continues to grow. We have successfully hatched praying mantises, allowing students to observe insect life cycles and predator-prey relationships firsthand. Our Silkie chickens remain a cherished part of the program, and we currently have six more Silkie eggs incubating. Students carefully maintain proper temperature and humidity levels, rotate eggs, and record observations in incubation journals. The nesting pads you provided have improved coop cleanliness and egg protection, reinforcing humane care practices and responsibility.\r\nThe hydroponics growing system has become one of our most exciting learning tools. Students are comparing soil-based planting to hydroponic growth, measuring plant height, monitoring root systems, and evaluating water usage. They are learning how sustainable agricultural innovations can conserve resources while producing nutrient-rich food. The worm castings enrich our raised beds naturally, closing the loop between composting, soil health, and plant production.\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials, their excitement filled the garden space. Many had never used professional gardening tools or seen a hydroponic tower system. Putting on aprons and taking ownership of real equipment shifted their mindset—they felt trusted, capable, and important. There was an immediate sense of pride and purpose.\r\nYour support gave you a glimpse into our classroom, but the growth continues. Our next steps include expanding hydroponic crop production to fully support our rehabilitated animals, increasing the number of native plant varieties in our pollinator garden, and creating student-led educational signage explaining the roles of tortoises, decomposers, pollinators, and sustainable farming systems. Students will also prepare presentations showcasing how composting, hydroponics, and ecosystem management work together to support both plant and animal life.\r\nIn the spring, our butterfly habitat and display cage will all allow our students to witness metamorphosis in real time. Planting milkweed seeds will support our certified butterfly habitat, reinforcing lessons about native plants and pollinator conservation. Watching a caterpillar transform into a butterfly will be a powerful moment for our students—one that will spark curiosity, reflection, and awe.\r\nThrough these experiences, students are building scientific literacy, problem-solving skills, collaboration, and compassion. They are learning that sustainability is not just a concept—it is a responsibility. They are seeing how small, consistent actions can restore habitats, protect living creatures, and strengthen communities.\r\nBecause of you, our students are becoming thoughtful environmental stewards, future innovators, and informed citizens. Your generosity has created a living classroom where learning grows every single day.","fullyFundedDate":1766621195275,"projectUrl":"project/wings-and-wigglers/9951361/","projectTitle":"Wings and Wigglers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Pluhar","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10379037_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1765431462299","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/wingsandwigglers"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_91440","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":775,"numTeachers":38,"percentFrplEligible":89,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":87,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"20.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":72.4,"schoolId":91440,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Abraham Lincoln Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Abraham Lincoln Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/anaheim-elementary-school-district/abraham-lincoln-elementary-school/91440"}
