My students are from all walks of life. Some are college bound, some are junior college bound, and some will enter the work force, the military, or specialized training. Many sophomores have jobs in the community and help support their families. Many sophomores are focused on their academic future and are diligent students. Many sophomores are committed to volunteer work at school and the larger community. They are all curious learners and want good books to read.
Reading and discussing a great piece of literature in a class with peers, guided by a teacher, is one of the most rewarding experiences of high school.
This book will give my students a new reading experience. Our class will connect with the food and recipes as well as the story, and history. We hope to connect to the Culinary Arts classroom as well.
The rich culture of family and food, love and despair will be explored and understood in class.
This book will offer opportunities for extended discussion on important topics such as family loyalty and responsibility. Students are interested in a novel when they can understand the events through the perspective of multiple characters. The setting of the story in Mexico offers a setting not currently in the required reading novels.
